February 1st...

Did you know that Willy Wonka opened his chocolate factory on my birthday? :) I thought it would be appropriate, seeing that the screen writers of the new flick chose my b-day to kick off a sweet adventure, to talk about some days to remember!

So should we take a world perspective, USAmerican, or should we make it personal? I'd say that since I've only been alive for a couple of decades + my dates might be limited, though I have some important ones.. but let's look at the grand picture of human history. I'm thinking my comments should be, as my increasingly complex "The Basics of Social Research" book states: "Although others might disagree with our conceptualization and operationalization, the definition would have one essential scientific virtue: It would be absolutely specific and unambiguous." (Babbie, 2005) Wow, I won't even go into his chapter on "concepts" because it makes me want to shoot every social researcher in the world and then myself.. ha-ha (I hate sociology!!)

Dates (Let's say the last 5 that meant anything to me..):

1. October 7, 2001 - Operation Enduring Freedom kicks off and essentially the United States declares that it will use its military and political power to snuff terrorism in the world..

2. September 11, 2001 - America is attacked... on our own soil and for the first time in a long time, American's are like.. "oh shit.. we're not invincible!"

3. August 27, 2001 - I went to the Marine recruiter's office and signed up for the Marine Corps! Effectively making me a more interesting man, yet causing some serious detriment to my intelligence.. ha-ha

4. January 1, 2000 - The world DID NOT come to an end... something tells me we're thinking way to much into our importance as human beings in the universe.. ;)

Wait a second, I followed absolutely no pattern in naming 5 dates that were important... and on top of it I didn't even name five! Here..

5. July 5, 1996 - Dolly was "created".. yes, the sheep was the first publicized clone and started a revolution in the way we humans look at life, reproduction, and the laws of nature we should and shouldn't cross...

It's funny you mention Y2K, because I was recently thinking about that day. During the mid 90's, it seemed so hard to imagine that years would start with the number two. Then in 2000 and 2001 I found myself creating payroll schedules and giving schedules into 2005 and 2006, and it just felt so "far away." And now we're there.

Yes, too much false sense of importance in this world, for sure. I do believe it's making me insane.

Sarah- Just think of it this way, if 2006 seems weird.. we'll probably be around for 2066!!!

Sad that your nice picture gets scrunched up into the little avatar window! :(

Thanks for being a long-time reader ;)

Yeah, what's up with the picture scrunching. I might mess with that some day. Or not. It looks fine from the dorky Blogger profile page.
